Dogs who don't Bark

If you’re on a look out for a relatively quiet dog, or your lifestyle or living arrangements do not allow for a dog that is very local, read on to learn more about dog breeds and types that tend to be less vocal than others.

1.       Whippet: The Whippet dog breed was a poacher’s best friend, speedily going after rabbits and other small game. Today the Whippet competes in agility, flyball, lure coursing, rally and obedience and is a loving therapy dog. His friendly nature, pleasing demeanor and stylish look make him a favorite as a family companion as well as in the show ring.

2.       Gordon Setter:  The name ‘Gordon’ comes from the 4th Duke of Gordon. The Canines of this dog breed compete in obedience, conformation and agility and are a terrific family and companion dog.

3.       English Toy Spaniel: The breed evolved centuries ago from toy and Spaniel breeds. Upbeat, affectionate and eager to please, the English Toy Spaniel appreciates plenty of activity.

4.       Chow Chow: An ancient breed with a lion-like appearance, the Chow Chow developed in China as an all-round working dog. Independent and fiercely loyal towards those known to him, the dog can be a bit wary of strangers. If you’re a stranger, the key to breaking the ice with this breed is to be calm around the dog and not be pushy. Once a certain level of comfort has been established, the dog’s friendly and loving nature is bound to surprise you!

5.       Newfoundland: The Newfoundland is a capable and hardworking dog, well suited to work on both land and water. He is a strong swimmer and equally strong ‘pack horse’. Sweet-natured and responsive, it makes for a wonderful family companion as well.
